The Integration of English Consonants into Mosull Arabic Phonology
- Title
- The Integration of English Consonants into Mosull Arabic Phonology
- Abstract
- This paper examines the phonology of loanword adaptation in general and the adaptation of English consonants into Mosuli Arabic phonology in particular. It aims at providing a way of analyzing the phonological adaptation of English loanwords into MA according to the principles and strategies of the Theory of Constraints and Repair Strategies Loanword Model (TCRS-LM) following Paradis (1988a, b; 1990; 1993), Paradis & Prunet (1988), Paradis and LaCharite (1993) and Paradis et al. According to this model, loanwords are brought into the borrowing language with ill-formed segments. These ill-formed segments violate the phonological constraints of the borrowing language and hence trigger the application of repair strategies to bring the ill-formed segments and stuctures into conformity with the phonology of the borrowing language. The study proceeds to verify the following hypotheses: first, English loanwords borrowed into Mosuli Arabic with a certain degree of foreignness are considered as ill-formed and need to be repaired, and second, there are limited steps, maximally two, in the repair process, if more steps are needed, the deletion of the ill-formed segment/ structure will be the result. The data used in this paper were collected from everyday use of Mosuli Arabic speakers. They consist of 50 English loanwords with the transcription of the audio-recordings of the productions of 20 informants. The findings show that the ill-formed segments and structures are adapted in the vast majority of the cases; while segment deletion occurs only when the repair strategy needs more than two steps. Adoption ( non-adaptation) of foreign segments and structures is also attested in the data. Suggestions for further studies have been given.
