- Title
- Quantum dot-based sensing of mercury pollutants: A comprehensive review of inorganic and carbon-based quantum dots
- Abstract
- The use of quantum dots (QDs) for detecting and monitoring mercury pollution, a significant threat to environmental sustainability and public health, was examined comprehensively. The sources and impacts of mercury pollution were discussed, emphasizing the need for effective sensing technologies. An overview of QDs was provided, focusing on their optical, electronic, and chemical properties, as well as their fabrication methods, to explain their potential in mercury sensing. The application of inorganic and carbon-based QDs in mercury detection was explored, with their unique characteristics, sensing mechanisms, recent advancements, and applications detailed. Challenges associated with using QDs for mercury sensing, such as sensitivity and selectivity, were also addressed, and strategies for overcoming these obstacles were proposed. Future directions for QD-based mercury sensors were discussed, highlighting their potential for integration into environmental monitoring and industrial applications. In conclusion, the importance of these sensors in combating mercury pollution was underscored, and their broader adoption in environmental monitoring efforts was advocated.
